Longlevens hand youngsters a chance to impress

The clubs reserve team face Gloucester City Under 18s tonight at Saw Mills. 7.30pm ko

With the first team now competing in it highest league with the clubs history, having competed in the FAs national competitions (FA Cup and FA Vase) in the previous three seasons, there is more reasons at Longlevens FC are in beyond spirits beyond the first team.

The reserve team have started well in their first season in Gloucestershire Northern Senior Division One - a league the first team were in 7 seasons ago, winning 2 out of their opening three games.

Reserve team assistant manager Tom Read speaks of the teams ambition for the season ahead "Andy Davies (Reserve team manager) and I have taken over this season with the help of Mark Cornell, with the aim of building a side able to challenge for promotion from northern senior 1 as well as build a side that can support the 1st team as closely as possible. The club also have ambitious 3rd and 4th teams with the aim of promotion across all teams"

This has blossomed into a rise in interested players attracted to the football club, something that Andy, Tom and Mark are keen to capitalise on.

"We've had a number of young players and university students approach the club via various means, resulting in us arranging a friendly against Gloucester City U18s for them to trial and showcase what they can do as part of the team set up against decent opposition. The idea of the game is for them to play in front of the other managers of the club to see where they fit in. Players include; ex cheltenham and forest green youth players as well as players currently at the University of Gloucestershire"

Further to the first and reserve team the clubs 3rd and 4th team are benefitting from the clubs youth set up with 5-7 players progressing from the clubs u17/18 teams into the mens teams. As many as 6 players under the age of 18 were involved in the fourth teams 2-0 win against Longford reserves on Tuesday evening.
